A Celebration of Justice and Equity

You are invited to a special celebration of equity and justice for the unveiling of the historic marker commemorating Benjamin Hance, a young Black man from Leonardtown who is the only documented lynching victim in St. Mary's County in 1887.
The commemoration will be highlighted by state and local dignitaries and special guests recounting Hance's story as well as vocal, dance and other artistic presentations from area high school students in recognition of justice and equity for all.
The official historic marker will also be unveiled to the public as a permanent reminder of Hance's story and hope for a better and more just society in the future.
