The Black Diamond Disaster - The Forgotten Tragedy on the Potomac

Head to St. Clement’s Island Museum for a weekend of activities commemorating a forgotten tragedy of the Civil War, the Black Diamond Disaster.

On both Saturday and Sunday, visitors get free water taxi rides to St. Clement's Island, tours of Blackistone Lighthouse and free admission to the museum, 10AM to 5PM each day. The final water taxi will leave at 3PM.

Saturday evening will also feature a showing of the silent movie "The Lighthouse by the Sea". More info TBA.

Sunday will feature a commemorative ceremony at 2PM with guest speaker Jake Wynn of the Clara Barton Missing Soldiers Office Museum and remarks by Naval Air Station Patuxent Base Commander Captain Christopher Cox. A reception at 3PM at St. Clement’s Island Museum follows the ceremony.

Background: On April 23, 1865, 87 lives were lost when the Black Diamond was hit by a steamer in the Potomac River near St. Clement’s Island during the hunt for John Wilkes Booth.
