Year of the Woman in Maryland
March is Women's History Month and Maryland is celebrating the 100th Anniversary of women's right to vote in America by launching exciting programs, activities and events by women, for women and focused on women traveling to St. Mary's County and through the great State of Maryland
Elect to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the ratification of the 19th amendment, which gave women the right to vote in Maryland. Visit St. Mary's MD and its partners are shining on light on women through exhibits, activities, and women of influence past and present.
Did you know that the history of woman's suffrage in Maryland has its routes in St. Mary's County? Margaret Brent, born and educated in England, settled in St. Mary's County in 1638 and soon became one of the largest landowners in the colonies. As an unmarried woman, Margaret Brent owned property in her own name, and likely was the first woman lawyer in the colonies, representing herself, her family and other women in court.
Margaret Brent petitioned the assembly for two votes, one as a landholder and one as Governor Calvert's executrix. While the assembly flatly denied her request to vote - and woman's suffrage languished for the next two hundred years, we can thank those such as Margaret Brent for paving the way for equal rights in our great state.
