We rate this a “classic country outing”! You’ll find farms to visit, general stores and a postcard-perfect church. And, a trip into the Seventh District takes you back to the beginning – St. Clement’s Island, Maryland’s birthplace.
Maryland Begins Here
St. Clement’s Island Museum tells the story of the first landing of British colonists in Maryland which took place in 1634, on the Potomac River island which is visible from the museum. A large cross commemorating the event and Blackistone Lighthouse sit on the far side of the Island facing the Virginia shore. Water taxi rides from the museum to the island are offered on summer weekends.
Quade’s Store, located along the Wicomico River near Bushwood Wharf, is a classic country story which enjoys a reputation for great crab cakes. Further north along Maryland Route 242, is the now sleepy burg of Chaptico. Once a thriving colonial town, Chaptico and its picturesque Christ Episcopal Church, felt the wrath of invading British troops during the War of 1812.
Evening music on the deck and sunsets over the water make tiny Morris Point Restaurant a favorite weekend dining spot.
