Maryland gets this nickname from the 400 Maryland soldiers in the First Maryland Regiment who fought courageously in the Revolutionary War, at the Battle of Brooklyn. It is said that General George Washington referred to these soldiers as "The Old Line." The First Maryland regiment fought a British force of 10,000 and helped General George Washington’s army escape. Washington depended on the Maryland line throughout the war, and the soldier’s bravery and discipline earned Maryland its nickname though it only came into use around the time of the Civil War.
