In March 2026, the 250th Year of American Independence, encounter the story of a modest man from St. Mary's County whose history deserves telling. This is part of Historically Speaking, presented in collaboration with the Center for the Study of Democracy at St. Mary's College of Maryland.

George Plater was born and raised at Sotterley Plantation. A senior official in the British administration, Plater chose to support the cause for independence. He represented Maryland in the Continental Congress from 1778 to 1780 and briefly served as Maryland's sixth Governor.

In this 250th year of American Independence, this is the story of a modest man from St. Mary's County who history largely overlooked.

David Brown spent over thirty years in the Foreign Service and taught at John Hopkins' Paul Nitze School of Advanced International Studies and was a Trustee at Historic Sotterley.
