Leah Penniman, the food justice activist, farmer, co-founder of Soul Fire Farm, and author of Farming While Black and Black Earth Wisdom, joins St. Mary’s College of Maryland as a featured speaker and honoree for the 2026 Margaret Brent Lecture.

Penniman’s cultivation of Soul Fire Farm, an Afro-Indigenous-centered community farm with a mission to address racism in the food system, and her support of farmers to strengthen food sovereignty movements make her the perfect selection for the 2026 Margaret Brent honoree with the SMCM 2026 “What is community?” theme.

This event is free and open to the public! Don’t miss Leah Penniman’s lecture on Wednesday, November 18, 2026, at 4:45 p.m. at the Cole Cinema, Campus Center, St. Mary’s College of Maryland.
