The topsy turvy weather has moved us from 80-degree sunny days to cool, windy conditions in a 24-hour span. The continued cool with lows in the 40's at night will chase the spot, blues, bull reds and trout out into the Atlantic for southern migration.
Kristin Hean with keeper rockfish caught on trolled bucktails (no weight) in the shallows of the Patuxent.
Mark Mitchell with rockfish that took a top water popper in the St. Mary's River.
That leaves us with rockfish both in the shallows and schooling up in the rivers and bay. There were stripers caught in all venues this week. Trollers found them using tandem rigs on the bottom and plain bucktails on the surface. Breaking fish in the Potomac are consistent south of Ragged Point, but they are small. Bigger fish should be moving in under the breakers soon. Stripers are consistent near the mouth of the upper Machodoc in the Potomac. This area just below the 301 bridge has been hot for several seasons. Troll, cast, jig, plenty of action. The Patuxent has rockfish everywhere. You just have to be there at the right time. As usual it is twilight and dawn that are most active. Moving tides are very important.
Josh is catching rockfish in the St. Mary's River and Smith creek casting top water lures and jigs.
Catfish are active now. The Wicomico near Cobb Island and Bushwood Pier has blue cats in good size and numbers. They like cut bait - spot or alewives.
Rockfish from Point Lookout this week (one of five) caught last Thursday morning.
Shore fishermen can find stripers at Piney Point, Point Lookout, Greenwood State Park, Myrtle Point, and Solomons Pier.
