Rockfish is the Name of the Game

The story all last week was excellent catches of rockfish in the Patuxent, Potomac, and the Bay.

Rockfish love those umbrellas. This double header was on the Shea-D-Lady out of Solomons.

The story all last week was excellent catches of rockfish in the Patuxent, Potomac, and the Bay.  The weather was the limiting factor as windy conditions allowed only limited windows of opportunity.   

Metal jigs or jig heads with shad bodies are the ticket around the pilings of the Solomons bridge.

Stripers in the Patuxent are taking umbrella rigs with gusto, as well as tandems, single bucktails and spoons. One regular fisherman trolling white Tony number 18 sized spoons did very well in the Sea Breeze area of the Patuxent. Jiggers using metal jigs and shad lures found willing fish under birds and surface feeders. Jiggers using slow pitch techniques at the Solomons bridge scored well. The Potomac reports were also very good all up and down the river.

Well, that was last week. Reports from Sunday morning from trollers up the Patuxent were mostly negative. Some experienced fishermen reported that hey struggled to find fish in regular haunts on Monday morning, but a couple were caught.

It seems that the outgoing tide in the late afternoon has been best.

Live lining spot near the Bay Bridge is hot!

The bay had breaking fish in the Chinese Mud area of the mouth of the Patuxent late last week. The rockpile at Cedar Point was too rough to fish on Monday morning.  As soon as we get some flat water, the rocks and Cedar Point rip should produce dependable catches.

This is prime rockfish season until December 13 in Maryland when the season ends. The Potomac is open until December 31.

White perch are schooled up in the rivers and bay. When you find them, it's two at the time!
