Rockfish Season Open and They Are Plentiful

Trollers and lure casters found plenty of rockfish when the season opened last Thursday.

Trollers of single lures, tandems, and small umbrellas found slot stripers in the 19 to 24 inch range, and many under and over.

The fish were in the mouth of Herring Creek and in and around St. George Island. Boats launched at the ramp in Piney Point at the foot of the bridge to St. George Island were catching fish right away. The mouth of the Patuxent was red hot with trollers, jiggers, and casters doing well at Fishing Point, Cedar Point Rip, Hog Point, the old lighthouse, and the Three Legged.

Shore fishermen were casting lures at Goose Creek, Hog Point, Fishing Point, West Basin and off the 'O Club rocks with great success. Bait fishermen have found stripers at the fishing pier under the Solomons Bridge, and all locations mentioned.

The stripers like swimming and top water plugs, jigs with paddle tails, and BKD's. The rockfish will take bloodworm, clams, cut bait, shrimp and squid. They are hungry.

Perch are in the creeks. I had to work for a handful this week in a shallow creek with cloudy water and high tides. The weather has presented a challenge with dirty water runoff from heavy rains. Perch and puppy drum will return with some dry weather, cleaning tides and clean water.

The rivers are producing red fish in the slot, and speckled trout and some early flounder. There are many reports of small spot hitting bloodworm and other bait in the creeks and rivers.

The rockfish season opens on June 1st in the Patuxent above Point Patience. Expect plenty; we know the are there.
