Spot have arrived and rockfish are biting

The Potomac has joined the Maryland Bay waters in opening the rockfish season. The Patuxent opened up to Point Patience. Trollers and casters caught stripers this week starting Saturday in the Potomac.

Windy conditions were a hamper, but crafty anglers were able to get their fish. Lure casters fishing the shorelines at Cedar Point on the Naval Air Station did well in the morning and at sunset. Favored lures are Wind Cheaters, Daiwa SP Minnows, and Yo-Zuri Crystal Minnows.

Spot were caught this week in the lower Potomac, specifically in the St. Mary's River. There were spot caught in Patuxent too. This is the vanguard of the summer migration that will fill the creeks and rivers until mid-October when they will return to the ocean.

The perch are returning to the creeks as the water temperature rises. There were some good catches by bottom fishermen at Ragged Point in the Potomac over the weekend. Perch and spot love bloodworms.

Catfish are active in the upper Potomac. The blue cats are in the Benedict area of the Patuxent and in the Potomac as far south as Cobb Island and Bushwood Wharf.
