Beautiful Weather, Beautiful Fishing

John B. caught this 41in, 47lb. blue catfish in the Patuxent on fresh cut eel.
We deserve the beautiful forecast that is going to be our week after some ugly hot, humid, and windy conditions last week.
The croaker are big and eager in the mouth of the Patuxent.
The bottom fishing is over the top good in the Patuxent. We have a combination of spot, croaker, sea trout, and white perch eager to take most any bait offered. The water temperature is high and will keep the fish here well into October
Trout, too. Bottom fishing is excellent.
Spanish mackerel are not as numerous in the bay now as they have been, but good catches are available as they are mixed with the bluefish which are here in force. The blues are in all sizes with the snappers further north and on the beaches. We had reports of limits (five per day per person) from the rocks and pier at Point Lookout. The blues are fast movers, and you need a little luck in catching them from the surf. When it is good, it’s very good.
Rockfish are along the shoreline and under.
Rockfish are in the shallows of the rivers taking lures cast in the morning and evening. Lots of good stories of fish hitting surface lures near the Solomons bridge. The shallows of the St. Mary's River are rockfish territory. Trollers in the deep near the edges of drop-offs should find some keepers for dinner.
Snakehead are biting too!
Big blues are in the ship's channel in the bay, mostly below Hooper's Island. Six to ten pounders are cruising around eager to take trolled surgical eel lures and spoons.
Erick caught multiple largemouth bass in the upper Patuxent Monday morning (Sept. 14).
The bull reds are still schooled up and breaking; but they are unpredictable.

Cobia season goes out on August 20 in Maryland and on August 15 in Virginia. This past weekend was the big cobia contest, and the weather was awful in the bay. Most boaters had to cancel out; there is always next year.
Fresh water fishing is excellent in the upper Patuxent and Potomac and in St. Mary's Lake. The bass are big and beautiful as are the crappie and bream.
