Rockfish season has begun!

Rockfish season has begun with good catches for lure casters willing to rise early and fish late. Piney Point has been a good location to find stripers in the 22 to 26-inch range (max is 24 inches). George Creek on the southern side of St. George Island has slot fish hanging around the piers and docks, and in the open water. Top water lures and swimming plugs and jigs all will bring strikes. There are reports of rockfish in the Patuxent in the shallows for lure casters working all structures natural and man-made. Trollers working the edges of drop-offs should find willing rockfish in both the Patuxent and Potomac.

The mackerel made themselves scarce early last week and everyone concentrated on bluefish and red drum which have been numerous.

We wondered where the mackerel moved and why. Many speculated that the four inches of rain in a 48-hour period may have sent them south. However, Captain Greg on the Miss Susie found them in their regular locations just south of the Patuxent on Tuesday morning. The bluefish have been dependable every day; the bull reds can come up any time. The lower Potomac from Ragged Point and St. George Island to Smith creek has some good blues and mackerel mixed for trollers.

Bottom fishing is reaching its zenith with spot and hardhead are plentiful in the Patuxent and Potomac.

White perch are a tough catch these days unless you have them dialed in with the tide and the sunlight is just right. There are some small perch making a pest of themselves while we are trying to get some eating-sized fish. This is a good sign. Tiny trout and some puppy drum are also taking lures.
Cutlass fish are concentrated around Solomon's Island. They like shiny spoons.
Crabbing is really good with crab pots filling up overnight in the creeks for homeowners. Crabbers using chicken necks and hand traps are enjoying a great season.
Hardhead (croaker) are getting big and will be here well into October.
The weather this week is going to be warm with cooler temperatures coming in for the weekend.
